Abstract:
Techniques developed in the field of machine learning are enabling numerous practical applications including recommender systems and machine translation, among many others. Such practical relevance is causing a great deal of media exposure plagued by enigmatic terminology and allusions to science fiction scenarios.
In this talk he will provide a basic introduction to the mathematics of machine learning. In particular, he will briefly describe the most common learning paradigm, and provide an overview for the recent results obtained by BCAM's Machine Learning group on an alternative approach.

Santiago Mazuelas (BCAM - Ikerbasque)
Santiago Mazuelas received the Ph.D. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Valladolid, Spain, in 2009 and 2011, respectively. He is currently an Ikerbasque Research Associate at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM). Prior to joining BCAM, he was a Staff Engineer at Qualcomm Corporate Research and Development from 2014 to 2017. He previously worked from 2009 to 2014 as Postdoctoral Fellow and Associate in the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Mazuelas is Member of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS), has received several awards including the Early Achievement Award and the Fred W. Ellersick Prize from IEEE ComSoc, and is currently associate editor of two IEEE Transactions.
