Info to live in Bilbao
Bilbao, the capital of Bizkaia, is a city that has successfully reinvented itself: from an industrial hub to a modern cultural and cosmopolitan metropolis. Today it combines tradition, innovation, and a unique environment that make it a lively and vibrant destination.
Iconic areas
- Guggenheim area: the cultural heart of the city, with the iconic Guggenheim Museum and the nearby Museum of Fine Arts.
- San Mamés: home stadium of Athletic Club and one of Bilbao’s symbols, surrounded by shopping areas and well connected thanks to the Bus Station.
- Casco Viejo (Old Town): the oldest neighborhood and birthplace of the city, with streets full of history and atmosphere.
- Gran Vía: Bilbao’s main commercial avenue, perfect for shopping and urban strolls.
CLIMATE
Bilbao enjoys a mild oceanic climate throughout the year, thanks to westerly winds and its proximity to the sea. There are no extreme temperatures: in winter the average is around 8 ºC, while in summer it reaches a pleasant 25 ºC.
LANGUAGE
As in the rest of the Basque Country, two official languages coexist in Bilbao: Spanish and Basque.
CURRENCY
The official currency is the euro. Most shops and services accept credit cards.
TRANSPORT
Getting around Bilbao and its surroundings is easy and convenient:
- Metro Bilbao connects the city with part of the coast.
- Bizkaibus links Bilbao with other towns in the province.
- Bilbobus – the public bus network connecting all city neighborhoods.
- Tram.
From the city, you can reach both the sea and the mountains in less than an hour.
Other Basque cities are also just a short trip away: Vitoria-Gasteiz in under 1 hour, and Donostia-San Sebastián in just over an hour.
GATRONOMY
Bilbao is synonymous with pintxos, small bites full of flavor that can be enjoyed in almost any bar. The typical plan is a pintxos route: having a txakoli, a Rioja wine, or a zurito (small beer) while tasting different specialties, then moving on to the next bar. A gastronomic and social experience that is part of the Basque essence.
PLACE OF INTEREST
- Guggenheim Museum: the city’s icon and one of the architectural gems of the contemporary world.
- Museum of Fine Arts: one of Spain’s most important art galleries, with works spanning from the 13th century to the present day.
- Casco Viejo (Old Town): the birthplace of Bilbao, with its famous Seven Streets, pintxos bars, traditional shops, and unique atmosphere.
- Artxanda Funicular: a short but spectacular ride up Mount Artxanda, offering the best panoramic views of the city.
- Arriaga Theatre: an elegant neo-baroque building inspired by the Paris Opera, hosting operas, concerts, and plays.
- Euskalduna Palace: congress and music center with a varied cultural program.
- Azkuna Zentroa (Alhóndiga Bilbao): a former wine warehouse turned into a cultural and leisure hub with a swimming pool, cinema, exhibitions, and more.
- Bridges of Bilbao and surroundings: including the Zubizuri Bridge, designed by Calatrava, and the Vizcaya Bridge in Portugalete (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
- Ribera Market: one of the largest covered markets in Europe, full of local colors and flavors.
- Doña Casilda Iturrizar Park: the green lung of Bilbao, perfect for strolling and relaxing in the city.
- San Mamés Stadium: “The Cathedral” of football, where Athletic’s red-and-white passion comes alive.
- Bilbao Estuary: the axis that transformed the city, ideal for walking or boat rides.
Every corner of Bilbao offers a contrast between tradition and modernity, art and gastronomy, nature and urban life.
