Prof. Javier Fernández de Bobadilla has been elected Member of the Academia Europaea
Javier Fernández de Bobadilla, group leader of the Singularity Theory and Algebraic Geometry at the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) and Ikerbasque Research Professor, has been elected as a Member of the Academia Europaea in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a researcher.
As a new member of the Academia Europaea, Professor Fernández de Bobadilla will contribute to the organisation’s mission of promoting excellence in European scholarship and providing scientific advice. The Academia Europaea (AE), founded in 1988, is one of the most prestigious academies, with individual membership drawn from Council of Europe states and other nations worldwide. Its members are renowned scientists and scholars spanning the full range of academic disciplines. The AE organises meetings and workshops, publishes the international journal European Review, and plays a pivotal role in providing scientific advice to the European Commission through SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies), as well as representing the Commission within the G20. The formal induction will take place during the Academy’s annual conference in Budapest, scheduled for the week of 12–16 October.
At BCAM, Professor Fernández de Bobadilla is a key member of the "Singularity Theory and Algebraic Geometry" research group. His work focuses on the geometry and topology of algebraic varieties, with a particular emphasis on singularities and degenerations. Throughout his distinguished career, his research has spanned several highly specialised fields, including:
- Equisingularity and arc spaces.
- Normal surface singularities.
- Geometry of degenerating families and Milnor fibrations.
- Intersection cohomology and Hodge theory.
- Lipschitz geometry and characteristic classes of singular spaces.
- Invariants derived from symplectic topology.
The election of Professor Fernández de Bobadilla further strengthens BCAM's international standing. He joins other eminent colleagues at the centre, such as Prof. Luis Vega (former Scientific Director of BCAM and Professor at UPV/EHU), who is also a member of the Academy and a recipient of the Blaise Pascal Medal.
