With excellence as its goal and focusing on establishing EHU as a leader in the Basque university system and a reference university in Europe and internationally, the ceremony took place in Miguel Unamuno Park at the Gipuzkoa Campus.

The program began with a summary of the 2024-2025 Academic Year Report, presented by the university’s Secretary General, Leire Garmendia Arrieta. This was followed by the inaugural lecture titled “Science in Emulsion: The Art of Uniting Diversity”, delivered by María Paulis, Director of the POLYMAT Institute, Professor of Chemical Engineering, and faculty member at the EHU’s Faculty of Chemistry.

During the ceremony, the gold medals were awarded to Miren Nekane Balluerka Lasa, Jose Angel Iribar Kortajarena, and Carlos Garaikoetxea Urrizar. The event also included a speech by the rector, an address by the lehendakari, and a performance by the University of the Basque Country Choir.

Rector Bengoetxea highlighted that during the newly started academic year, “we will have as our compass the needs and care of the university community and the strategic challenges of the EHU”. He noted that the year will be based on three pillars: the 2026 budget, the strategic plan for 2026-2028, and the new university statutes.

The opening ceremony was attended by José Antonio Lozano, Scientific Director of BCAM and Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at UPV/EHU, and recipient of the Euskadi Award 2024.
