The SEIO - Spanish Society of Statistics and Operational Research, in collaboration with Fundación BBVA, has announced the winners of the prestigious 2025 Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions to the fields of Operations Research and Data Science.
BCAM proudly highlights two groundbreaking achievements from its researchers:
1. María Merino Maestre (Professor and researcher at UPV/EHU and BCAM), José A. Lozano (BCAM's Scientific Director and Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at UPV/EHU), Gorka Kobeaga (Data Scientist at CDM Consultores), and Jairo Rojas-Delgado (Senior Software Developer Engineer at Archlet) have been honored for their exceptional methodological contribution in Operations Research. Their article titled "A revisited branch-and-cut algorithm for large-scale orienteering problems," published in the European Journal of Operational Research, sets a new standard in computational efficiency and solution quality for orienteering problems. This achievement marks a significant milestone in advancing algorithmic methodologies, enhancing scalability and effectiveness in problem resolution strategies.
2. Santiago Mazuelas (Ikerbasque Research Associate Professor at BCAM), Yuan Shen (Professor at Tsinghua University, China), and Aritz Pérez (Postdoctoral Researcher at BCAM) have been recognized for their outstanding contribution in Statistics and Operational Research applied to Data Science and Big Data. Their article "Generalized Maximum Entropy for Supervised Classification," published in IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, extends the maximum entropy principle to supervised classification. This pioneering work introduces minimax risk classifiers with exceptional performance and theoretical guarantees, significantly impacting fields such as data science, machine learning, signal processing, neuroscience, and natural language processing.
These achievements underscore BCAM's commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation in critical scientific domains.
Congratulations to all the winners on their remarkable contributions!
