During the event, BCAM organized and participated in several key panels, contributing to the exchange of knowledge and the advancement of mathematical research and its application in various fields.
- Monday, July 15 Panel: Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics BCAM organized a panel titled "Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics."
In recent years, artificial intelligence has surged strongly, a technology that has been in development since the 1950s and shares a common foundation: mathematics. What can AI do to help solve mathematical problems? Conversely, what fundamental contributions can mathematics make to the development of AI? Can they ensure that these new AI tools are reliable and can prevent threats and risks?
This panel brought together renowned experts such as Luis Vega, Principal Investigator of the Severo Ochoa accreditation at BCAM; Matti Lassas from the University of Helsinki; and Begoña Vitoriano from the Complutense University of Madrid. The discussion explored the intersections between artificial intelligence and mathematics, and how these disciplines can mutually benefit to develop reliable AI tools and address emerging challenges in this field.
- Wednesday, July 17 Panel: Open Access to Scientific Literature
On Wednesday, BCAM was represented in the panel "Open Access to Scientific Literature (OA)," organized by the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica. This panel highlighted the importance of open access in scientific literature, allowing any user to read, download, copy, print, and distribute research without financial, technical, or other barriers. Miguel Benítez, Project Manager at BCAM, along with other experts such as André Gaul (EMS Publishing House), Ignasi Labastida i Juan (University of Barcelona), and Pilar Rico (FECYT), discussed regulatory, research, and publishing aspects of open access and its impact on science, particularly in the field of mathematics.
- Thursday, July 18 Panel: Mathematics Institutes and Talent Development
On Thursday, the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Seville (IMUS) organized a panel with the participation of José Antonio Lozano, Scientific Director of BCAM; Justo Puerto, director of IMUS; Anna Wienhard, director of the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences (MPIM); Martin Bridson, president of the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI); Miguel Sánchez, director of the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Granada (IMAG); Rosa Crujeiras, director of the Center for Research and Mathematical Technology of Galicia (CITMAGA); Lluís Alsedà, director of the Centre de Recerca Matemàtica (CRM); José Antonio Lozano, director of the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM); and Javier Aramayona, director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences in Madrid (ICMAT).
The panel addressed crucial topics such as talent attraction through mathematics institutes, doctoral programs, partnerships with companies, knowledge transfer, international recognition in rankings, self-financing, and the organization of conferences and congresses to promote mathematical research at the European level. This panel featured prominent figures like Justo Puerto (IMUS), Anna Wienhard (MPIM), Martin Bridson (CMI), Miguel Sánchez (IMAG), Rosa Crujeiras (CITMAGA), Lluís Alsedà (CRM), and Javier Aramayona (ICMAT).
Additionally, BCAM had an exhibition stand at the congress aimed at showcasing the Center and attracting talent.
BCAM's participation in ECM Sevilla underscores its continued commitment to advancing applied mathematics and integrating it with other disciplines, promoting the exchange of ideas and international collaboration.
