BCAM researchers participate in different initiatives for the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
11 February is the day recognised by the UN to promote the access of girls and women to STEM careers
The United Nations declared 11 February as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science to promote and improve the access and participation of women and girls in science. This year, the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics - BCAM, is once again taking part in different initiatives carried out with the participation of researchers from the centre.
Judit Muñoz, Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoc, and María Ángeles García-Ferrero, Juan de la Cierva Postdoc, are participating in the 11F initiative, which organises different activities to raise awareness of the work of women in the STEM field and to learn first-hand about the factors that affect the current situation in order to promote practices that lead to its elimination and achieve gender equality in science. Judit will give a talk at the IES CRUCES centre on 11 February. On the other hand, María Ángeles will give a talk on 14 February at the CPES SAN LUIS centre. She has also recorded a video for the activity #CUÉNTAME11F, with the aim of bringing her research work closer to the public, which will be available from 23 February on the organisation's YouTube channel.
On the other hand, María Ángeles will participate on 10 February in a round table organised by Afi Escuela de Finanzas, where she will talk about The presence of women in STEM careers with the participation of Mª Jesús Carro, international reference in mathematical analysis, Andrea González, Postdoc at Staford University and i3M, Ester Lázaro, head of the Molecular Evolution department of the Astrobiology Centre, and moderated by Pilar Barrios, partner of Afi Escuela de Finanzas.
Finally, Lore Zumeta, PhD student, will participate in an event organised by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid coinciding with the celebration of the Day of Women and Girls in Science and within the framework of the activity "Gymkana The Science of Data, Mary Eleanor Spear", aimed at young people with the aim of encouraging a vocation for STEAM careers. This activity is part of the UC3M STEM for Girls Programme.
