BCAM's Scientific Director José Antonio Lozano  participated in the second Ricardo Echepare Conference.
With the support of the Department of Science, Universities and Innovation, the Ricardo Echepare Conferences are held as part of the EHU Summer Courses.

The conference was opened by Juan Ignacio Pérez Iglesias, Minister of Science, Universities and Innovation of the Basque Government and held at the Miramar Palace in Donostia–San Sebastián, as part of the EHU 2025 Summer Courses. This conference is  celebrated annually in memory of Ricardo Echepare, professor and former director of the Summer Courses,

José Antonio Lozano, 2024 Euskadi Research Award, Professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at the EHU and Scientific Director of BCAM, gave a talk entitled “General Artificial Intelligence: Myth, Goal, or Threat?”
There, he addressed the concept of General Artificial Intelligence from a critical perspective. Starting from a simple definition – ‘intelligence like human intelligence’ – Lozano explored different theoretical approaches, the technical challenges it poses and its philosophical and social implications.

He also emphasised the need to distinguish between real advances in artificial intelligence and fictional narratives that often distort public perception of the current capabilities of this technology.
