Colegio San Pelayo concludes the academic year for BCAM’s ‘Matematikhariak’ Dissemination Program

Last week, the Basque Center for Applied Mathematics (BCAM) welcomed students from Colegio San Pelayo, marking the grand finale of this academic year’s Matematikhariak outreach and dissemination program. The visit was a closing note for an initiative that has successfully brought the applied mathematics closer to the regional student community.

With this final visit, the Matematikhariak program celebrates an exceptional milestone: more than 750 students have passed through the dissemination programme during this school year. Designed to bridge the gap between school curricula and research, the initiative offers young learners a unique opportunity to interact with professional researchers and discover the real-world impact of applied mathematics.

In this last school visit, researchers Leo Gavira (MSLMS) and Javier Sanguino (ML) participated as speakers, leading an interactive activity centered on the mathematical tessellations found in the iconic tiles of the Alhambra. Through this dynamic activity, students explored how geometry and symmetry connect art, history, and advanced mathematics in a practical and engaging way.

Throughout the school year, the program has hosted diverse interactive sessions, activities, and tours. These activities aim to demystify mathematics, turning complex concepts into accessible, engaging narratives that spark scientific curiosity and foster future STEM vocations.

As the doors close on this highly successful edition, BCAM extends its gratitude to all participating schools, educators, students and BCAM researchers, who contributed to making this year a success. BCAM remains deeply committed to nurturing young talent and looks forward to welcoming the next generation of thinkers in the upcoming academic cycle.
