María Wonenburger SOMMa Lecture Series – Call for Nominations
María Josefa Wonenburger Planells (Oleiros 1927 – La Coruña 2014) was a pioneering Spanish mathematician whose influential contributions to Lie theory, Coxeter groups, and representation theory -as well as her mentorship of leading figures in the field- have left a lasting mark on contemporary mathematics.
The SOMMa mathematics centres — BCAM, CRM, ICMAT, IMAG, and IMUS — are pleased to announce the launch of the María Wonenburger SOMMa Lecture Series, a new visiting-researcher programme designed to promote scientific exchange and strengthen collaboration across our institutions.
This programme will support visits by outstanding researchers in any area of mathematics, with particular encouragement for nominations of women mathematicians.
TARGET
Research groups at the participating SOMMa mathematics centres are encouraged to submit expressions of interest to nominate potential visitors. It is expected that the proposed nominee has been contacted in advance and has agreed in principle to the nomination, including the proposed dates of the visit and the centres to be visited.
DURATION
We welcome nominations for visits from October 1, 2026 to July 31, 2027. We anticipate supporting at most two visitors during this period.
Each selected visitor will spend time at a minimum of two SOMMa mathematics centres, for between one and three weeks at each site.
SUPPORT
Selected researchers will receive:
- Travel support, including travel between SOMMa mathematics centres.
- Accommodation and per diem.
DUTIES
During each stay, visitors will deliver lectures or graduate courses presenting their work to the local community.
HOW TO APPLY
The deadline for applications is 15th June 2026.
All applications must be submitted to the email address of one of the institutions you are interested in (visitingfellow@bcamath.org) for BCAM.
Please attach the following documents:
- A brief CV of the nominee.
- A motivation letter detailing the proposed dates of the visit, the centres to be visited, a short description of the receiving groups, a brief summary of the topics to be discussed during the visit, and the proposed lectures to be delivered.
In addition, please fill in the following Application Form.
SELECTION
A dedicated selection committee will evaluate all nominations.
TIMEFRAME
Resolutions will be sent by July 10, 2026.
Programa de puestos de prácticas
BCAM ofrece a las y los estudiantes internacionales excelentes la oportunidad de incorporarse a un centro de investigación interdisciplinario de primer nivel mundial en Bilbao (España). BCAM es un conjunto de investigadores con diferentes trayectorias en matemáticas y ciencias aplicadas, que trabajan en la teoría, modelización, análisis, optimización/control, solución numérica y simulación por ordenador de sistemas dinámicos, motivado por problemas del mundo real en áreas como control de olas, la aerodinámica, redes de comunicación, procesamiento de imágenes y vídeo, biología/medicina, finanzas, etc. Para más información sobre las actividades científicas que desarrolla el BCAM, consulte las Líneas de Investigación del BCAM.
BCAM busca: graduados y alumnos de máster y doctorado en matemáticas y en otras disciplinas relacionadas, que estén altamente motivados.
También agradeceremos solicitudes para los puestos de periodos de prácticas que pueden plasmarse en formatos de:
- Estancias de verano o un semestre
- Tesis de máster
- Proyecto industrial
- Parte de una tesis doctoral
Los candidatos seleccionados serán responsables de aprender, sugerir y aplicar ideas bajo la supervisión de los investigadores del BCAM y con arreglo a un plan establecido, con el objetivo de resolver con éxito las cuestiones indicadas en el anuncio del puesto de prácticas, así como de preparar los resultados esperados.
Recordamos amablemente que el BCAM ofrece dos tipos de puestos de prácticas:
- El líder del grupo de la línea del investigador puede solicitar un puesto de prácticas para un candidato seleccionado. Para esa opción, le rogamos que contacte con el supervisor de la línea de investigación en la que le interese realizar las prácticas. Encontrará sus datos de contacto en las líneas de investigación del BCAM.
- Se han publicado los siguientes puestos de prácticas. Rellene el siguiente formulario y seleccione el puesto que le interese. Le recomendamos encarecidamente que presente su solicitud al menos tres meses antes de la fecha de inicio que prefiera. En el caso de que no precise financiación del BCAM, le rogamos que contacte directamente con el supervisor potencial.
